Step 1. Launch DVD to iTunes Converter for Mac and add DVD Movie ( free download )

Drag & drop DVD disc icon on the desktop to the program. Or go to “File” menu, choose “Load DVD” to locate the DVD movies (including DVD Video, DVD IFO file, DVD folder, dvdmedia file) you want to add.

Step 2. Output Settings

Tip 3. Video Effect

In the Video Adjustment window, drag the slider to set the brightness, contrast, saturation and volume. You can also choose a special effect from the Effect drop-down list to apply to your DVD movie.

Tip 4. Capture Pictures

After the files added, you can preview the movie in the preview window on the left of the main interface. While previewing the movie, you can capture pictures by clicking the Snapshot button.

Before getting started, let’s know something about DVD and Windows Movie Maker.

General DVDs have CSS copy protection in MPEG-2 or VOB format.

Windows Movie Maker is a totally free program that comes with Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Professional, and Windows Vista (also called Windows DVD Maker). Windows Windows Movie Maker supports WMV, AVI and MPG video files.

To put DVD movie clips into Windows Movie Maker, you need to convert your DVD to WMV or AVI video first, and then load it into your Windows Movie Maker project. I’d prefer using Aimersoft DVD Ripper to do this. ( Free Download )

Step 1. Import DVD movie

Insert your DVD disc into your DVD-Rom, then run the software, click “Load DVD” button and add the DVD file. You can also add DVD/IFO from your hard disk by clicking “Load File”

Note: This DVD Ripper can rip copyright protected DVD movies, but you should remember it is illegal to rip DVD for any business purpose.

Step 2. Choose output format/subtitle/audio track, trim the movie

After you load the DVD files, click the “Profile” drop-down list to select “WMV 每 Windows Media Video (*.wmv)” or “AVI 每 Audio Video Interleaved (*.avi)” as the output format.

A regular DVD movie has multiple “Subtitles” and “Audio Tracks”. This DVD Ripper allows you to select any available subtitle and audio track to convert to the specific video/audio format you need.

If you just want a certain part of the DVD movie, you can click the “Trim” button to cut the DVD movie. You can drag the timeline bar to set the start and end time or simply input the “Start Time” and “End Time” to get the specific part of the movie.

Step 3. Start to convert

After the above steps, you just need to click “Start” and wait for the conversion to be finished. It takes about 40 minutes to convert a common two hours DVD movie.

Step 4. Import the output video into Windows Movie Maker

Run Windows Movie Maker. Tn the “Movie Task” bar, click “Add Video” to browse your computer and locate and import the converted files. Then you can start to make personal movies.

Tip: Many users may wonder how they can convert Windows Movie Maker file (*.MSWMM) to other video format or burn MSWMM to DVD. A *.MSWMM is a project file of Windows Movie Maker; it is not a video file (more like a record file). You can open *.MSWMM file in Windows Movie Maker (click “File -> Open Project Project…”) and save the movie to your computer: go to the “Tasks” bar, click “Finish Movie” and then click “Save to my computer”.

To watch the Blu-Ray movies, what you need to do is simply rip the Blu-Ray DVD into a video format supported by iPad. After you have the files in a compatible format upload them into your iPad through the sync of iTunes Library.

Step 1. Launch Blu-Ray to iPad Ripper and add Blu-Ray Files

Click the “BD/DVD ROM” button to extract Blu-Ray movie from disc. Or click the “BD/DVD Folder” if you would like to add Blu-Ray files from your PC. The video information of the loaded Blu-Ray movie will be shown in the file list. You can rename the output videos in the file list, select the chapters/titles to convert, choose DVD subtitle and audio track, etc. Double click a selected file, and you will be able to preview it.

Step 2. Choose Output Format

Extend the “Format” drop-down list and choose “iPad” from the category. From the subcategory, you may choose “iPad HD Video (*.mp4)”, “iPad Video H.264 (*.mp4)” or “iPad Video MPEG-4 (*.mp4)” as the output format.

If you want to customize a profile for the output video, you can click the “Settings” button next to the Format field to open the “Profile” window and set video resolution, frame rate, bit rate, encoder, etc. See the figure below:

Step 3. Click “Start” to Rip Blu-Ray DVD to iPad

Check the file list and make sure all the required files are selected. Then click the “Convert” button to start ripping Blu-Ray DVD to iPad.

Step 4. Transfer Output Video to iPad

Connect your iPad to the computer and sync it with iTunes.

To play the movie on your iPad, select Videos then Movies from the iPad Main Menu. You will see an alphabetical list of the available movies. Click on the desired movie to play it.

DVD Shrink (Windows, Free)

DVD Shrink is a free and capable ripping tool that excels at, as the name would imply, shrinking DVDs. DVDs come in two common formats: DVD-5 (4.7GB) and DVD-9 (8.5GB); the Reauthor mode in DVD Shrink helps you to ditch disc extras and strip most larger DVDs down to fit into a standard (and less expensive) DVD-5 disc. DVD Shrink does a good job handling many protection schemes, but hasn’t been updated to remove some of the newest schemes.

DVD Fab (Windows, $50)

DVD Fab is a commercial DVD ripper that supports the removal of all current DVD copy protections. In addition to being current on protection schemes, it boasts a large array of options for stripping and repacking your DVDs once the copy protection is removed. You can rip the entire disc, rip only the main movie, or split it into pieces—among other options. Like DVD Shrink, DVD Fab also supports compressing DVD-9 discs to fit on DVD-5 discs.

Handbrake (Windows/Mac/Linux, Free)

Handbrake is a DVD-ripping tool with a strong emphasis on not just ripping media but recoding it for playback on computers, portable devices, and other non-disc based systems. Handbrake can help you convert DVDs and other MPEG-based video into MP4 and MKV files. You can tweak settings like video frame rate and audio codec playback to your heart’s content with Handbrake, and even batch encode all your media at one time to make filling up your iPod or other device relatively painless. The one major shortcoming of Handbrake is that it doesn’t have any copy protection removal tools built in, which means you may occasionally need to use a 3rd-party stripping tool to prepare your DVD for conversion.

AnyDVD (Windows, $60 per year)

AnyDVD is another commercial entry in this week’s Hive Five. It’s not cheap, with a one year license running $60—although the multi-year discounts quickly stack up—but it can boast that it stays on top of current protection and encryption schemes to makes sure you’re never locked out of your own discs. In addition to stripping protections from the disc, it also has the ability to control DVD playback speed so that DVDs played on media center computers will play slower and quieter, and it allows you to remove things like forced subtitles, warning screens, and disc material you don’t want.

DVD Decrypter (Windows, Free)

Although DVD Decrypter hasn’t been updated since 2005, it still works on a significant number of DVDs and has a strong following resulting from both its original user base and new users who find it cuts through the copy protection on their current DVDs protected with CSS, Macrovision content protection, region codes, and other hindrances.

Note: The following guide only focuses on how to use this DVD Ripper for Mac to rip DVD to iPod on Mac OS X. If you want to rip DVD to video/audio format for another specific mobile player, just start over and choose another profile from the “Profile” drop-down list in Step 3.

The missing ripper

No doubt the best free tool to extract the content of a DVD as a video file is Handbrake. This is like a one click solution for your DVD converting needs.

But there are many online discussions mentioning that converting the DVD directly using Handbrake doesn’t always give users the best result. To keep the result as good as possible, the DVD has to be ripped first to the hard drive before being converted by Handbrake.

There’s only one name that keeps popping up as the best free tool to rip DVD: MacTheRipper.

This is a free app, but you actually have to do a little web searching to get the download link. There’s a story behind these extra steps : MacTheRipper is developed in a country where ripping DVD’s (even the ones that you legally own) is forbidden by law, so the developer had to take the down the link.  To honor the developer’s goodwill, I will not include any link here either. But worry not, finding the app is not that difficult. -cough-torrent-cough- ahem. ‘Scuse me.

Rip the DVD into a VIDEO_TS folder, then open the folder as a source from Handbrake.

Choose Your Configurations

In order not to mess things up with all the complicated configurations, the first thing you need to do is to choose the resulting file you want to produce out of the (ripped) DVD.

There are some pre-configured settings that you can choose from the preset pane on the right. Choose iPod because that’s the topic today. Choose Low-rez if you only want to watch the video on your iPod, but choose Hi-rez if you are also thinking of plugging the iPod to your TV and watching the movie from the real tube.

The video configuration will always change, reflecting what setting you choose from the right pane. Unless you understand what you are doing, I suggest you don’t change anything from the configuration in the main window.

Instead, go to the Audio & Subtitles tab. I also prefer not to mess with the audio configuration, but this is the place to go if you want to add subtitles to the converted video. Just choose one subtitle from the available option.

The last step is to click the “Start” button above and make yourself some coffee while waiting for the process to finish.

If you have more than one movie to be converted, click the “Add to Queue” button after finishing the settings for one movie, then move on to the next movie. After all the movies are standing in line, you can click the “Start” button.

After the conversion process is finished, all of the converted movies will be added to iTunes and automatically synchronized to your iPod when the gadget is connected to your Mac.

Now you can safely keep those discs and enjoy the pod.

Handbrake is also available in Windows and Linux version, while MacTheRipper is Mac only.

So that you can copy and convert the whole DVD movie or just convert the selected titles or chapters. You can choose to convert certain segment of the DVD movie using trim function.

Step 2. Output Settings

At the bottom of the main window, you can select a format according to the name of your player. For example, you can select ‘MOV-QuickTime (*.MOV)’ when you want to rip DVD to QuickTime on Mac, and the default setting works great. Step 3. Start Conversion

Tip & Trick 1. Trim movie clips

Tick the Check boxes of the chapters or titles you want to trim, and click the “Trim” button to open the Trim window below:

Drag the slider to set the starting time and ending time, click OK.

Note: You can preview the trimmed movie clip before conversion in preview window.

Tip & Tricks 2. Crop movie clips

Check the chapter or title you want to trim, and click the “Crop” button to open the Crop window.

Select an output aspect ratio and the available options are: Keep Original, full screen, 16:9 and 4:3.

Note: You can enter the crop values manually or drag the rectangular selection frame round the video to select the displaying area.

Tip & Trick 3. Merge several titles or chapters into one file

You’ll find “Merge into one file” at the bottom of the program window, after you select the titles and chapters you want to rip and finish the output settings, you can tick the check box of “Merge into one file” to merge several titles or chapters into one. This allows you to merge all movie titles into one output file so that you can enjoy a long movie without breaks.

A report filed by a tipster claiming access to iTunes 9 says that it is “possible” the next version of Apple’s media player will sport both DVD import and playback as well as Facebook integration, allowing users to advertise songs and playlists with their friends.

The report and screenshots were published by the Boy Genius Report, which earlier in the month wrote that iTunes 9 is expected to allow organization of iPhone apps and iPod games and indicated some sort of social media integration was in the cards.

The latest report includes screen shots that depict a Facebook category in the iTunes Source list, allowing users to advertise new song titles and playlists in their Facebook profile. Also included is a screen shot of how advertised tracks would appear on Facebook.

BGR also presents a screen shot of iTunes 9 that suggests the capability to sync music, video, podcast, and photo content to third party device, a Samsung YH-J70xx MP3 player. Apple has previously only signaled a disinterest in supporting sync with third party devices, actively halting the Palm Pre’s attempts to identify itself as an iPod.

More interesting are the depiction of buttons in the lower right that allow for DVD playback and import, suggesting that iTunes could do for DVDs what it got started doing for CDs. Were Apple to negotiate the right to rip DVDs, it would radically change the home movie industry in ways the industry has not demonstrated any interest in exploring. However, the addition of a “DVD Playback” button suggests that the screen shots are more likely to be fakes, as iTunes already has a playback button: “play.”

The studios have worked hard to thwart any commercial attempts to enable users to rip their own DVDs, recently filing an injunction against RealNetwork’s DVD Ripper software and even opposing a home theater installer from allowing users to rip their own DVDs for digital playback, despite the system not even producing an easy to distribute copy.

At Macworld Expo 2008, Apple announced having worked out a compromise with Twentieth Century Fox called Digital Copy for iTunes, which puts a mobile version of the movie on the DVD for use with iPods, the iPhone, Apple TV, and other media devices. Many new DVDs now include a Digital Copy of the movie, which doesn’t require any media ripping steps (transcoding and compression); instead, it simply initiates an iTunes download using a code included with the DVD.

Ripping an entire DVD (which includes defeating its copy protection and transcoding) would require Apple to obtain a special exemption from the DVD Forum license, something that hasn’t happened before. Similarly, the current DVD license also means that adding DVD playback to iTunes would require Apple to disable screen shots while the app was running, indicating that the screen shots of what appears to be iTunes playing a DVD would also need to be the product of a very relaxed DVD license or simply an outright fake.

Rumors also indicate Apple is gearing up to support Blu-ray playback, something that Apple has shown no interest in doing despite being an early member of the Blu-ray Disc Association and remaining one of its 19 board members. Blu-ray discs compete directly against Apple’s preferred model of selling and promoting digital downloads.

While Blu-ray offers major advantages for high end users in terms of audio quality and video resolution, Apple primarily sells devices that don’t really benefit from Blu-ray’s higher resolution, prompting Apple to leave the new disc technology to HDTV makers like Sony and LG to push.

Apple is expected to release a new update to its iPod lineup in its September 9 event, which will likely also include an updated version of iTunes and possibly the long anticipated Apple TV 3.0 update adding support for HTTP Live Streaming, which has already shipped as part of iPhone 3.0 and will be part of the new QuickTime X in Mac OS X Snow Leopard.
