How to Remove DRM from iTunes Video and Burn to DVD on Mac

In this guide, I’d like to show you how to remove DRM protection from iTunes video (movies, music videos, TV shows, etc.) and burn iTunes video M4V to DVD on Mac OS X. It is composed of the following two parts:

Part 1. Remove DRM from iTunes video and convert iTunes video M4V to MP4

The software you need is Mac iTunes Video Converter.

a. Download and install iTunes Video Converter on your Mac and run it.

b. Add iTunes DRM video to iTunes Video Converter.

Click the “Add” button to add the video files you want to convert. The software will open the iTunes movies library by default. Select the files and then click “OK”.

c. Choose MP4 as the output format by clicking the profile drop-down list.

d. Click Convert icon to start conversion.

Part 2. Burn the output MP4 converted from iTunes video to DVD

The software you need is Mac DVD Creator.

a. Download and install DVD creator for Mac and run it.

b. Import the MP4 files into the program

Two methods are available for you to import the MP4 files into the program. One is to choose the files and directly drag them into the program, the other is to find their location and input them by clicking the “+” button.

c. Create DVD menu

A unique DVD menu can add much color to your DVD. Mac DVD Creator allows you create distinctive menus for your DVD with various built-in dynamic and static templates resources.

d. Start to burn MP4 to DVD

DVD Creator for Mac provides four output options: DVD Disc, DVD Folder (Video_TS), ISO file and DVDMedia file. You can choose any of the output style to burn your files. Or if you would not like to burn them immediately, just save your edited files as a project file, which could be imported again for further editing or burning.

How to Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

Mac OS X Lion is available now! If you decide to upgrade to OS X 10.7, you first need to update your existing Mac OS X installation, check app compatibility and backup your data.

Before getting started, check whether your Mac meets the OS X Lion system requirements, which in brief are a Core 2 Duo or higher processor and at least 2GB of RAM.

Step 1. Upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 and get the Mac App Store

You won’t be able to upgrade an existing Mac to Lion without having access to the Mac App Store and 10.6.8:

Run Software Update and be updated to Mac OS X 10.6.8 including the Mac App Store

Step 2. Check for App Compatibility and Update Apps

You’ll want to make sure that Lion supports the apps you are dependent on. Most apps should be updated by their developers to support Lion, but you can also quickly check for incompatible apps by looking at System Profiler to identify any PowerPC applications – these won’t work.

Step 3. Backup your Mac and Data

The likelihood of something going wrong during the upgrade is slim, but that’s not the point, you need to backup your data. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

There are a few different approaches to data backups, the easiest method is to just use Time Machine and let it run a full backup. You can force Time Machine to perform a backup manually just by right-clicking on the Time Machine drive and selecting “Backup Now”.

Step 4. Install Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

Got your data backed up? Good. Installing OS X Lion is very easy, in fact it’s probably the easiest major Mac OS X upgrade ever. All you need to do is download it from the Mac App Store and launch the installer.

This will update your existing 10.6.8 installation to 10.7 and takes about 20 to 40 minutes after it has been downloaded, depending on the speed of your hard drive.

How to Convert Video Files on OS X Lion

In this guide, I’d like to show you how to convert video files on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion using Video Converter for Mac.

Step 1. Download Video Converter for Mac and run it.

Step 2. Load video files you want to convert.

Drag and drop the video files to the program or you can click the “Add Files” button to browse your computer hard disc and add the video files you want to convert to the program.

Batch conversion is also supported by this Video Converter for Mac, so you can load several video files at one time.

Step 3. Output settings

After you added video files, you can select an output format for each video file and specify a directory on your computer to save the output files.

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Includes a Video & Media Encoder in the Finder

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion includes media and video encoding tools directly in the new Finder.

You can access the video encoder by right-clicking on a movie file and then selecting “Encode Selected Video Files” as seen in the screenshot below:

This brings up the conversion settings where you can select your media encoding options. Here you can set encoding to 480p, 720p, 1080p, or audio only. These options cover the full spectrum of existing iOS hardware, and also suggest that future iOS devices will be capable of playing 1080p video (Apple TV 3 maybe?).

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

The audio only option is another nice touch and looks like it’ll remove the need for tools like Evom if you want to convert video files to MP3 format.

Users wanting an easy way to convert videos for your iPhone or iPad is evidenced by apps like the video to iPhone tool Miro Video Converter sitting at the top of the Mac App Store. It’s clear Apple wants to remove the (perceived) complexity of these kinds of tasks, and building a media encoder into Mac OS X Lion is a great step in that direction.

It’s worth pointing out that while this feature appears in the Developer Preview, it may or may not be released in the final version of Lion. I think it’s a great addition to Mac OS X, so let’s hope it is.
