Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Includes a Video & Media Encoder in the Finder

February 28th, 2011

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion includes media and video encoding tools directly in the new Finder.

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

You can access the video encoder by right-clicking on a movie file and then selecting “Encode Selected Video Files” as seen in the screenshot below:

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

This brings up the conversion settings where you can select your media encoding options. Here you can set encoding to 480p, 720p, 1080p, or audio only. These options cover the full spectrum of existing iOS hardware, and also suggest that future iOS devices will be capable of playing 1080p video (Apple TV 3 maybe?).

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

The audio only option is another nice touch and looks like it’ll remove the need for tools like Evom if you want to convert video files to MP3 format.

Users wanting an easy way to convert videos for your iPhone or iPad is evidenced by apps like the video to iPhone tool Miro Video Converter sitting at the top of the Mac App Store. It’s clear Apple wants to remove the (perceived) complexity of these kinds of tasks, and building a media encoder into Mac OS X Lion is a great step in that direction.

It’s worth pointing out that while this feature appears in the Developer Preview, it may or may not be released in the final version of Lion. I think it’s a great addition to Mac OS X, so let’s hope it is.

How to Make All Your Video AirPlay-Compatible

December 1st, 2010

With iOS 4.2′s release, iOS devices (iPod touch 4, iPhone 4, iPad) and iTunes can now stream video to Apple TVs—video that meet’s Apple’s specs, that is. Here’s how to convert your video collection to play over AirPlay and look good doing it.

The Settings

Apple’s specifications allow for both the MPEG4 and H.264 codecs, but H.264 is a better choice so we’ll just stick with that. We’ve used Handbrake to apply these settings and convert our videos to be AirPlay-friendly because it’s 1) free and 2) cross-platform, but you can use any video encoder that can create an H.264 .mp4 file. Here are the settings you want to use:

HD Videos

  • Video Codec: H.264 (Main Profile)
  • Video Bitrate: 5442kbps (anywhere between 5000 and 6000 kbps should be fine)
  • Video Resolution 1280×720 (also known as 720p)
  • Frames Per Second: 30 (or less)
  • Audio Codec: AAC (Low Complexity)
  • Audio Bitrate: 160kbps
  • Audio Samplerate: 48 or 44.1 kHz

SD Videos

  • Video Codec: H.264 (Main Profile)
  • Video Bitrate: 2124 (anywhere between 2000 and 2250 kbps should be plenty)
  • Video Resolution 640×480 (approximately—content will vary, but if it’s standard definition you don’t need to worry so much about the resolution)
  • Frames Per Second: 30 (or less)
  • Audio Codec: AAC (Low Complexity)
  • Audio Bitrate: 160kbps
  • Audio Samplerate: 48 or 44.1 kHz

Video Encoding Software

You’ll also want to download Handbrake so you can start converting your videos. I would also recommend checking out this video converters review to find the one that best fits your needs. Those recommendations aside, feel free to use whatever you’d like. Just apply the settings you see above and you’ll be good to go.

If you’re sticking with Handbrake, you need to do three things. First, click “Picture Settings” to adjust the video resolution:

How to Make All Your Video AirPlay-Compatible

Next, set the video bitrate to 5442 (or, really, anything between 5000 and 6000 kbps):

Finally, set the audio bitrate to 160kbps, the samplerate to 48kHz or 44.1kHz, and the encoder to AAC (although these options will likely be selected for you already):

That’s all there is to it. Once you’ve got all your videos queued up, convert them and you’ll soon have an AirPlay-ready video library at your disposal.
